FAQs
How do you boil eggs?
Boiled eggs are technically not boiled, but simmered. Timing is the most important factor here, as the difference between a soft-boiled egg and a hard-boiled egg is simply the cooking time.
Are my eggs bad?
Give an egg a water test by placing it in a bowl or jar of water. A fresh egg is heavier and will sink to the bottom, lying on its long side. A less fresh egg's drop will be slower and it will bounce at the bottom. A bad egg will simply float.
Why won't my meat brown?
If meat isn't brought to room temperature and patted dry, it will not brown properly because of too much moisture being released into the pan. An overcrowded pan can also be a problem because a pan's temperature is lowered by too many pieces of meat being added at one time.
What does carmelize mean?
To carmelize sugar, heat sugar over low flame until it melts and develops a flavorful, golden-brown color.
How do you peel garlic?
Smash the garlic with the flat end of the knife under the heel of your palm, then slide or peel the papery skin off. You can also shake them out of their skin with the help of two bowls. Place the garlic in one bowl and cover it with another and shake vigorously to dislodge the cloves from their skin.
What does baste mean?
Baste means to put drippings, butter or marinade over food while cooking. Usually meats or vegetables. This can be done with a spoon, basting brush, suction squirter.
Can I freeze bacon?
Yes, lay two or three slices of bacon across one end of a piece of plastic wrap. Wrap the bacon over and over in the plastic until you reach the other side of the sheet. Then, starting at one end of the wrapped bacon, roll the stacked strips into a tight spiral. Repeat with the remaining bacon. Place the spirals inside a freezer zip-top bag or container and seal.
